Description – tert-Butylhydroquinone is a synthetic aromatic organic compound which is a type of phenol. It is a derivative of hydroquinone, substituted with a tert-butyl group.
Application – TBHQ, like many food additives, is used to extend shelf life and prevent rancidity of oils and fats. It is a light-colored, crystalline product with a slight odor. TBHQ also protects foods with iron from discoloration.
